SOS Malta in Sri Lanka

Posted Date: 11/01/2005

Meeting with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka at the Prime Minister’s office in Colombo. SOS Humanitarian Mission to Sri Lanka paid a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, accompanied by Fr. Neil and Mr Lalin Fernando. SOS Malta explained their mission to Sri Lanka and highlighted the aid that the Government of Malta and the Maltese people were sending to this fellow commonwealth country. The Prime Minister was very cordial and thanked SOS Malta for its mission in Sri Lanka. He expressed gratitude towards the generosity of the Maltese people and directed SOS Malta medical team to go and help in the south of the island, especially in the badly stricken area of Matara.

The team then proceeded to the Ministry of Health where they were given official documentation for them to proceed with their mission in Matara. Arrangements for travel and accommodation in the Southern region were made through Fr. Neil and the Standard Trading Co. (PVT) Ltd. SOS Malta is now registered with the Centre for National Operations in Colombo and is on the database of all NGO’s operating in the country.

SOS Malta’s team plan to leave Colombo tomorrow morning by car. On the way to Matara the team will attend a meeting with the Bishop of Galle to be able to have a clearer picture of the situation and needs of the people in the Southern region.
