SOS Malta is currently in Uganda bringing water to three primary schools in Jinja.
Claudia Taylor-East said the project aims to use the provision of water as the entry point into community development in Uganda.
Through this Project SOS Malta is contributing to the achievement of millennium development goal seven to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation.
SOS Malta is working to bring rain water harvesting systems to schools.
But there is also a real need to improve the actual conditions of the schools themselves.
Specifically, SOS Malta has identified Luala Primary School in Mbiko, a school for 750 children in a state of complete dilapidation, and embarked on its reconstruction last week.
The main building will be completely renovated, an existing water tank and the plumbing system will be repaired and two rain water harvesting tanks to serve all 750 children will be installed.
The reconstruction is well underway and SOS Malta volunteers are currently painting the building.
SOS Malta also identified another two schools where it shall be fixing existing water tanks and installing new rain water harvesting systems.
The project is being co-financed by the Overseas Development Aid programme through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
